  38. What is the purpose of posting these kinds of comments to the net? 
  39. Jim, could you lighten up a little? Direct insults among a public
  40. forum are not going to change anyone's mind one way or the other. They
  41. are only going to make people mad... and people that are mad don't 
  42. discuss, they don't learn, they don't exchange ideas. They just get
  43. mad.  A little sarcasm with a smile is one thing.... direct insults
  44. are quite another.  The information he posted is available to anyone,
  45. he didn't "steal it", it wasn't "bought from a spy". If you are going
  46. to get mad at someone, get mad at the government that releases that 
  47. information to anyone that wants it. The fact that it is considered to
  48. be one of the freedoms that this country is built around shouldn't 
  49. matter. Argue with the FEDS not Parnass... let us all know how you 
  50. make out.

  63. Seeing all the questions about the Mac' Hyper-card stack that is
  64. available for brushing up on the Amateur exams reminded me that I
  65. have not yet released my version for the IBM-PC family...
  66.  
  67. Is anyone interested in this type of thing?  Here are some
  68. specs:

  70.     AutoExam: Generates an exam from Novice to Extra. Different
  71. version *every* time.  Answers to a particular question are also randomized!!
  72. This program (at this time) does NOT use any graphics, or special colors.
  73. This allows it to be accessed via packet radio (i.e., under DOSGATE).
  74. The program can be used interactivly, or to print exams and answer keys.
  75. It can also print a study guide.
  76.  
  77.     Limitations:  Not currently using graphics, so some questions that
  78. deal with drawings (schematics) are *crude* to say the least (I am currently
  79. working on makeing a graphics version of this.
  80. Runs under MS-DOS (version 3.x or newer).  OS/2 version upon next compile.

  82.     Last years question pools... Novice to Extra... need to obtain the
  83. new question pools... (this is not too much of a limitiation as most questions
  84. in last years pools *very* similar to the new pools.

  86.     I am not in the distribution business, the software currently has
  87. a 'shareware' type of label on it... I am about to remove this 'restriction',
  88. that was actually placed on it to deter requests for me to send copies
  89. of the program to each individual...

  91. Also I have AutoCW, with runs under DOS or OS/2.  This program makes use of
  92. the computers hardware for timing and requires NO calibration routines or
  93. other fear of bad timing... It is NOT a flashy graphic-color program, but
  94. a good tool for generating either random code or keyboard/file driven code.

  181. Just a short query about the Yaesu FT-470 that I just bought a few weeks
  182. ago.  Does anyone know of a way to open  up the receiver in the 450 mHz
  183. range?  I have learned to toggle extended receive for the 144 mHz range
  184. but have no clue for the rest, if such is possible.

  186. AND, my quick take on the radio for those interested:  Do what I didn't do,
  187. use each of the dual band hand helds for  a few minutes after talking to an
  188. owner of each to really feel out the features and weaknesses.  I bought the
  189. 470 for its size and sensitivity (I backpack with my HT for thrills), but I
  190. pay some price in intermod (just discovered).  Its a nice radio and I would
  191. buy it again, but I now see that there are some clear differences in the 
  192. available brands which my salesperson led me to believe didn't exist.

  244. The limiting factor in every doppler unit I've seen or head tell of
  245. in switching noise, with antenna gain a close second. Friend K8DJR
  246. has managed, through extensive mods, to clean up a Dick Smith box to
  247. the point where he chases the beam until he's one mile from the fox,
  248. and then switches to doppler. 
  249.  
  250. The Datong boxes are much better, with a usable range of 10+ miles.
  251. One friend has a protoype based on a special mil-spec Datong product
  252. that uses a different method of antenna switching and bearing calculation
  253. and has an even greater range. (No, you don't want it. The finished unit
  254. costs over $8,000)
  255.  
  256. Successful doppler users don't just plug-and-run. The most successful hunter
  257. I know has all his stuff built into an RF-tight enclosure with switchable
  258. preamp and attenuation, adjustable S-meter and a few other bits and pieces.
  259. This attention to detail pays off.

  261. I have not been too successful with my Double-Ducky experiments yet, but
  262. I'm still working on antenna and switching designs. Has anyone out there
  263. had any success with the phase-sensitive L/R indicators, as per the
  264. original QST articles?
